BE 401 - Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Death Related Rituals

F 3 credits This course presents a cross-cultural perspective on death, death related rituals, and mourning. Similarities as well as differences in the understanding and treatment of death cross-culturally and the ways in which different views influence death practices will be explored. The understanding of death by the world’s major religions and the ways these religions determine death and mourning practices in different countries are examined. The influences of immigration and acculturation on traditional death practices in the United States are discussed. Death rituals and rituals of mourning of various ethnic groups in the United States are also considered. Prerequisites: SO 101 or PS 101, BE 201 and Junior standing.
